Strategic Property Partners has broken ground on a 519-key JW Marriott hotel within Water Street Tampa, a $3 billion development in downtown Tampa, Fla., and one of the largest real estate projects in the U.S. Once fully built out, the mix-used waterfront district will include more than 9 million square feet of commercial, residential, hospitality, educational, entertainment, cultural and retail space.

A grand opening of the JW Marriott Tampa is scheduled to take place in the fall of 2020. It is estimated that more than 23,000 people will live, work and visit the area.

JW Marriott Tampa will be in the proximity of community anchors such as Tampa Convention Center, Tampa Bay History Center, The Florida Aquarium and Amalie Arena, home of NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning.

“The hotel (…) will introduce an elevated guest experience in the Tampa Bay region and play a key role in enhancing the lifestyle of one of the country’s fastest-growing cities,” Noah Silverman, chief development officer with North America Full Service Hotels for Marriott International, said in a prepared statement.

Taking over the waterfront

Designed by Nichols Brosch Wurst Wolfe & Associates, with interior concept created by Champalimaud Design, the hotel will be Marriott’s first luxury property in the region. It will incorporate 100,000 square feet of meeting and event space, with a large ballroom of approximately 30,000 square feet. Amenities will include multiple social spaces across six levels, full-service spa and fitness center, a pool, ground-floor restaurant and a rooftop lounge and terrace on the hotel’s 26th floor—the highest rooftop bar in Tampa Bay.

In addition to the JW Marriott Tampa, SPP is also renovating the 727-room Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel and Marina. The two hotels are located adjacent to one another and together will encompass a total of 1,246 rooms and 150,000 square feet of social space.
