Skender Delivers Loyola University Lab
The new engineering science flex facility encompasses 10,000 square feet and features a large glass facade that will allow the public to observe the inside activity.
Loyola University Flex Lab
Skender Construction has completed a new, 10,000-square-foot engineering science flex laboratory for Loyola University Chicago. The single-story building was designed as a collaborative, open environment where students in the university’s engineering science program are provided with the opportunity to investigate and create. To deliver the tech-oriented facility, Skender worked together with SmithGroupJJR, Elara Engineering and Thornton Tomasetti.
The lab is located at 6339 N. Sheridan Road, near the intersection with North Broadway and close to the lakefront. It features a large glass facade designed to provide natural light and also to allow the public to observe the students’ activity. The facade was built using smart technology in the form of sensors that change the color of the glass according to the sunlight’s intensity. Thus, the glass becomes less transparent at sunset.
The completion of the Loyola University lab comes half a year after Skender began interior construction on C.H. Robinson’s new Chicagoland home. The 207,000-square-foot Sterling Bay-designed office is located in Lincoln Park, Ill.
