Rhode Island Hospital Lands $13M Renovation Project

A partnership of Newport Hospital, E4H Architecture, Suffolk Construction and BR+A Consulting Engineers has broken ground on a $12.5 million, five-phase renovation project in Newport, R.I. The construction will focus on redeveloping Newport Hospital’s emergency department. Part of the Lifespan health system, the 21,000-square-foot facility will comprise almost 30 treatment zones upon completion in September 2019. 

The 11,000-square-foot addition includes a Rapid Treatment area with six exam rooms, a Clinical Decision Unit consisting of four 23-hour stay rooms and a behavioral health pod with four treatment rooms. Converting 6,000 square feet of adjacent outpatient and administrative areas, the development will also contain three triage spaces and a total of 4,000 square feet of new interior finishes. Health amenities will include wall-mounted workstations for bedside registration and documentation. Other features will comprise:

• an open reception desk and waiting area
• a separate new lounge and waiting area
• an expanded staff lounge and conference room
• a modernized medication room
• upgraded finishes at administrative support areas
• energy-efficient led lighting 

“Newport Hospital’s vision has been not only to increase emergency department space, but make it function more efficiently and effectively for patients, physicians, nurses and support staff,” said Chris Anglese, associate at E4H, in prepared remarks. “This renovation project will improve patients’ experience year-round and especially during the busy summer tourism months, while also ensuring a higher level of sensitive, dignified treatment for Newport Hospital’s behavioral-health patients.”

The project increases treatment spaces by 75 percent. The existing emergency department will remain operational throughout the construction process.
