Osram, an international lighting and technology company, has introduced a digital tunable white (TW) system based on Digital Addressable Lighting Interface (DALI-2). DALI-2 is designed for human-centric lighting applications and is suited in educational, commercial office and health-care settings.

The firm’s TW system mimics the natural daylight cycle by reproducing the hues and brightness of natural light. This dynamic natural light positively impacts human well-being by helping to regulate the 24-hour sleep-wake cycle. Cool white light with higher proportions of blue light can have a stimulating effect, whereas warm white with higher proportions of yellow can have a calming effect.

The system consists of the following elements:

  • a two-channel LED driver, pre-programmed to specific correlated color temperatures of 2700K to 6500K and light intensities between one and 100 percent
  • wall station, which sends preset scene commands to the driver
  • light engine
  • optional control power pack

The lighting scenes can be reprogrammed to suit specific needs. Osram’s product can be used as a standalone system or part of a connected solution. The driver can also be paired with third-party tunable white light engines.

“Human-centric lighting can benefit human health and well-being but often tunable white solutions compromise on light quality and can be difficult to install, commission and use. For those environments that need a centrally managed, connected solution, this tunable white system is compatible with light management systems capable of communicating via DALI-2 for type 8 devices,” Naveen Tumula, product group marketing manager at Osram Digital Systems, said in prepared remarks.
