On a year-over-year basis, new orders increased by 5.4 percent or approximately 25 billion for all manufacturing industries. The most relevant change came from Fabricated Metal Products, which gained 13 percent since September 2016, but dropped 1.6 percent compared to August 2017. New orders increased for most of the remaining industries, except for Furniture and Related Products (1.9 percent) and Electrical Products (1.5 percent).

Compared to August 2017, new orders decreased for most industries, with Computers and Electronic Products recording the most significant decrease (27.8 percent). Transportation Equipment increased by 9 percent or approximately 7 billion on a month-over-month basis, followed by Durable Goods Industries (4.3 percent) and Electrical Products (1.3 percent).
