In April there were nearly 6.7 million job openings nationwide, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Tuesday. April’s employment report noted that there are nearly 6.4 million unemployed people nationwide, meaning that there are now more job openings than unemployed.

Job openings increased in durable goods manufacturing (up 33,000) and information (up 26,000), but decreased in finance and insurance (down 84,000) in April. Over the 12 months ending in April, U.S. businesses hired for a total of 66.1 million jobs. Also over the last 12 months, there were 63.7 million separations—both employees quitting voluntarily and being laid off—yielding a net employment gain of 2.4 million jobs, the BLS said.

Separately, WalletHub reported that the best states in which to find a job are Washington, Colorado, Minnesota, Utah, and New Hampshire. The least attractive states for job hunting are Alabama, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Kentucky, Mississippi and West Virginia.

The company determined the most and least attractive states for employment by comparing the states across 29 key indicators of job-market strength, opportunity and a healthy economy. Its data set included such metrics as employment growth, median annual income, average time spent working, job satisfaction, and average commute time.
