DoveHill Acquires Historic Connecticut Hotel

This is DoveHill’s second acquisition of an Auberge Resorts Collection property.

DoveHill has acquired Mayflower Inn & Spa, Auberge Collection, in Washington, Conn. The property offers a 35-key boutique inn in Litchfield County. The purchase price was not disclosed.

Auberge Resorts Collection acquired the hotel from Sparta Properties in 2018. Auberge will continue to manage the hotel under DoveHill’s ownership. Mayflower Inn offers guestrooms and suites ranging from 933 to 1,200 square feet.

Amenities across the 58-acre property include a fitness center, pool, tennis court and a 20,000-square-foot wellness center with spa treatments and recreational activities, known as The Retreat at Mayflower Inn. This center represents a partnership between wellness brand THE WELL and Auberge Resorts Collection that the two formed in 2020. Additionally, there are two restaurants on the property, The Garden Room and The Tap Room.

Also in 2020, the hotel went through an interior renovation by interior designer Celerie Kemble, where she utilized colors, florals, and printed wallpaper to create a country house feel. Mayflower Inn & Spa was originally built in 1894 as a private boys’ school. It wasn’t until 1920 that it was reimagined and operated as a hotel.

Targeting wellness opportunities

Following the acquisition, DoveHill is planning to make enhancements across the luxury property. Mayflower Inn is located at 118 Woodbury Road. Bradley International Airport is within approximately 50 miles from the hotel. New York City is within about two hours from the property.

This purchase is part of DoveHill’s strategy that targets luxury independent hotels and inns in the New England area, with a strong focus on wellness. Last August, the firm acquired White Barn Inn in Kennebunk, Maine. The property includes a a spa, a pool and the Cora Houseboat. DoveHill has the same approach of making targeted enhancements across the 28-key property. White Barn Inn is also part of Auberge Resorts Collection.

In other hotel news, earlier this week, TMGOC Ventures secured a $104.5 million construction loan for an office-to-hotel conversion in Savannah, Ga. The project calls for the redevelopment of two office buildings into a 168-key Ritz-Carlton hotel.
