Boyd Keeps Echelon Place Alive After 2 Years of Limbo

Since financing shortfalls forced Boyd Gaming to halt construction of the $4.8 billion Echelon Place project two years ago, the mixed-use project has stood as a cautionary tale of overreach. Recently, the developers recently took steps to keep the incomplete project alive, petitioning Clark County to extend several key deadlines.

In particular, Boyd requested the extension of three permit deadlines and a design review to 2018, VegasInc reports. Since the developers have yet to set a date to re-start construction, commissioners may stipulate installation of some form of masking until work resumes on the 80-acre site. That would shield from sight the partly complete development, which some say has become both a symbol of  the city’s hard times and an eyesore.

At full buildout, the property was to include up to 5,300 hotel rooms and other components, including the following:

• Mondrian at Echelon: 860 keys
• Delano Hotel: 550 keys
• Hotel Echelon, (main tower of the development)
• Enclave all-suite tower
• The Shangri-La Hotel Las Vegas
• Las Vegas Expo Center: 750,000-square-foot convention center
• Casino: 140,000 square feet.
• 400,000-square-foot retail center
