US Bank Breaks Ground on $250M Minneapolis Data Center

Stream Data Centers agreed to lead the construction work at the latest U.S. Bank data center located in Chaska, Minn. The single-story, 56,000-square-foot facility is expected to cost $250 million to build, and should be operational by the end of this year.

Upon completion, the center will incorporate two separate substations designed to support 2.4 MW of IT data load. The concept for the data center combines structurally enhanced buildings, independent infrastructure and high-quality operations.

“The Twin Cities are rapidly becoming a major national data center market,” said Rob Kennedy, co-managing partner of Stream, in prepared remarks. “This new facility demonstrates the strength of a talented local workforce, robust incentives, available power and growing connectivity.”

Chaska is a submarket of Minneapolis, located fewer than 30 miles away from the city’s downtown area. It is considered to be a hotbed for data centers, having attracted several projects in recent years due to its private electric utility, fiber-optic connectivity and local incentives.

At the end of last year, city officials announced the approval of a tax abatement of approximately $550,000 during the next 20 years to support U.S. Bank’s project. These same officials are currently working to attract an additional grant of $250,000 for improvements at the electric substation that serves the center.

Minnesota’s largest company, UnitedHealth Group, opened a data center directly across from where U.S. Bank will operate its own.

In February, Stream also broke ground on its 10th project in Texas—a ready-to-fit data center in Plano, Tex.
