Two Arizona Architects Selected to Design New Banner Health Facility

Banner Health has tapped two Arizona architecture firms to design its new hospital in Tucson. This venture follows Banner Health’s merger with the University of Arizona Health Network in late February.

The Phoenix-based nonprofit private health system has awarded the contract to Shepley Bulfinch of Phoenix and GLHN Architects & Engineers Inc. of Tucson. The facility will operate under the guidelines of Banner–University Medicine, the recently formed academic enterprise. The new Banner–University Medical Center facility will rise 11 stories high, and it is scheduled for completion in 2019.

Shepley Bulfinch prepared the master plan for the new Banner facility. The company was also in charge of the phased renovation of the Medical Center’s Surgical Services and Radiology Departments, carried out in 2013.

The design firm’s portfolio includes projects in several domains from education to urban development, but it is also involved in numerous healthcare projects such as the Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire. Shepley Bulfinch also worked with Tucson city officials and community stakeholders on the development of the Main Gate Overlay District near the University of Arizona campus. During the past decade, Shepley Bulfinch has been honored with more than 50 design awards.

Headquartered in Tucson, GLHN Architects & Engineers Inc. offers services in architecture and mechanical, electrical, civil, and technology engineering. The firm has been involved in healthcare projects for over 40 years, working at over 120 VA Medical Centers nationwide and renovating more than 100 areas on the University of Arizona Medical Center campus. GLHN has also collaborated on the Streetcar Maintenance and Storage Facility and Pima County Courts Complex, both located in downtown Tucson.
