Cleveland Clinic Opens 300 KSF Research Facilities

Cleveland Clinic has opened two research buildings totaling 300,000 square feet on its Main Campus in Cleveland, Ohio. The facilities are part of the health system’s broader research expansion and the Cleveland Innovation District.

Financing for the expansion comprised $420 million in public and private investment, including funding from the State of Ohio and JobsOhio through the Cleveland Innovation District. The initiative brings together state, health-care and higher-education partners. The project was also partially funded through philanthropic gifts.

Partners on the development included designer Cleveland Clinic Buildings + Design, in collaboration with HOK Architects and Vanderweil Engineers. Gilbane Building served as construction manager.

The facilities are located along Cedar Avenue in Cleveland’s Fairfax neighborhood, at the intersection with E. 100th Street. Together, they house more than 700 employees and nearly 30 laboratories and core service areas, adding biotech lab space supporting scientific, translational and computational research. Downtown Cleveland is about 4 miles away.

Two research buildings within metro Cleveland

The larger facility totals approximately 170,000 square feet and sits on the east side of E. 100th Street. It is home to Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Global Center for Pathogen Research and Human Health. The second building, on the west side, comprises about 120,000 square feet and houses specialty research facilities and core services.

The properties include advanced research laboratories, classrooms, offices, a café and collaborative areas. The project also added greenspace, landscaping and walking paths, creating a new entrance to the southeast portion of Cleveland Clinic’s Main Campus.

Since the Cleveland Innovation District launched in 2021, Cleveland Clinic has created nearly 2,000 jobs tied to the district, exceeding its original goal of 1,000 full-time-equivalent positions. The nonprofit academic medical center’s main campus comprises 51 buildings totaling about 12.6 million square feet.
