Tucson International Airport begins $15M-$20M Terminal Upgrade

The Tucson Airport Authority has selected Sundt Construction Inc. as construction manager at risk for a terminal optimization program at the Tucson International Airport. The project is expected to begin in late 2015, and the construction cost is budgeted at $18 million to $23 million.

Since its inception in 1890, Sundt Construction has become one of the largest construction firms in the United States. Headquartered in Tempe, Ariz., the company offers construction services involving civil, federal, industrial, building, and concrete contracting. According to the company, the new project will consist of the relocation of two existing security checkpoints to a new, enhanced configuration; expansion of pre- and post-security concessions; and major building infrastructure upgrades.

The project is Sundt’s third major venture for the airport since 2002 – the first included the expansion of the main terminal including ticketing and baggage claim areas, partial demolition of the original upper roadway, construction of an enclosed passenger link to the car rental facility, and construction of a new de-planing roadway. In a second phase, Sundt renovated the interiors of the East and West Councourses, including upgraded finishes, new mechanical and electrical systems, and additional restrooms, conference rooms, stairs and two elevators.

“Our previous success delivering both a terminal expansion and concourse renovations for the airport played a significant role in our selection for this project,” said Sundt Project Director Kurt Wadlington in a recent press announcement. “When completed, the new facility will serve as an enhancement to the Tucson International Airport experience, increasing the  passenger’s level of service and opening up concessions opportunities that will help build airport revenues.”

Other airport projects in Sundt’s track record include the Wichita Falls Municipal Airport terminal replacement in Wichita Falls, Texas; Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport passenger terminal expansion in Phoenix; and San Diego International Airport landside modifications in San Diego.
