One of Tempe’s most troubled landmarks is getting a much-needed makeover after 14 years of abandon. The Hayden Flour Mill is one of the area’s iconic images and it is finally going to capitalize on the support of the people. Mayor Hugh Hallman has announced that the renovation will commence in the near immediate future.
Funding for the makeover received a major boost after a $200,000 donation to the initiative by Wally Zaremba. Zaremba presides over the Zaremba Group, a real estate company that has taken over the former Tempe Towers and reworked them into what is now known as West 6th apartment towers in the downtown area. Total necessary funds will total $605,000, two thirds of which have been secured by the Rio Salado Foundation.
The structure of the 1918 building does not require major reconstruction work. There will be a brand new coat of white paint over the mill. Major machinery used in the milling process will be restored and placed closer to the windows to increase exposure to these items. An added bonus to the renovation will be the creation of a meeting spot that would permit the holding of smaller concerts or movie screenings. The Tribune reports that the renovation should not exceed a few months.
