Starwood Retail Partners has named Vincent Corno as senior vice president of development. The real estate industry veteran will oversee the company’s redevelopment and construction projects from its Chicago office and will report to COO Jeff Zeigler. Corno’s responsibilities will also include the creation of individualized strategies for each of the 30 malls that Starwood Retail manages, to turn them into mixed-use complexes. He will also assist in the underwriting of future acquisitions and negotiate with department stores.

Before joining Starwood Retail, Corno was president of Midwest of Brixmor Property Group, overseeing the redevelopment and leasing efforts for a 100-property portfolio totaling more than 20 million square feet. He also worked for the real estate divisions of DDR Corp., Dick’s Sporting Goods and Saks Inc. During his career, he was also a trustee and then a member of the executive board of the International Council of Shopping Centers.

The hiring was done as Starwood Capital has been re-evaluating the properties it manages to determine how to transform them into live-play-work communities that would create “genuine downtown cores,” according to Michael Glimcher, Starwood’s CEO. Part of the company’s redevelopment project is the $125 million renovation and expansion of The Shops at Willow Bend in Plano, Texas. Other properties that will undergo improvements include Stony Point Fashion Park in Richmond, Va., and MacArthur Center in Norfolk, Va., as well as Northridge Mall in Salinas, Calif., and The Mall at Wellington Green in Wellington, Fla.
