The $180 million Stadium Place development got a a major boost when the Pioneer Square Preservation Board unanimously approved the controversial design for the project’s second apartment tower.
Designed by ZGF architects, the 333-unit South Tower will reach an elevation of 240 feet, only 30 feet lower than CenturyLink Field, which is less than 500 feet away from Stadium Place. The building’s stacked massing has drawn comparisons to 1970s science-fiction movies design and to Stonehenge.
City officials and local residents spoke in favor of the tower’s design, and the preservation board explained that the project would knit CenturyLink Field with the rest of the Pioneer Square neighborhood. Project supporters say that Stadium Place will help revitalize an area that has been left behind while development has thrived elsewhere in Seattle.
Developed by a joint venture of Daniels Real Estate and R.D. Merrill,  Stadium Place will consist of three residential towers when fully built out. The structures will rest on  a four-story podium that will include 74 residential units, 16,000 square feet of retail space and 369 parking stalls.
