Essentially meant to extend the service into the University City submarket, the Mid-Coast Trolley line will be continued from the Santa Fe Depot in the city’s core. Slated for revenue service five years from now, the line is already under construction. Specs on the project call for 11.5 miles to be added, with nine new stations included in the project. A number of high-interest areas will be serviced by the Mid-Coast Trolley as a result of the new line, including the Westfield UTC Transit Center, UC San Diego, the Mission Bay area, and the VA Medical Center.

Starting just north of the Old Town Transit Center, the new line will continue along the I-5 to Gilman Drive, then crossing to the west side of the route, serving the UCSD campus. Following the campus, the line moves back east of the I-5, where the UCSD east campus and Scripps Memorial Hospital will be served. Following the line’s completion, residents along the Trolley extension will be connected to other areas including Mission Valley, East County, and South County.

According to official estimates, population in the Mid-Coast Corridor is forecasted to grow by roughly 19 percent by 2030, with employment following closely. The new Trolley extension is meant to help with the problems caused by traffic congestion in the area.
