SBS Construction Begins Work on a 78,000-SF Facility; SA Library Earns LEED Gold Certification

Self-storage developer SBS Construction has begun construction on Taft Self Storage, a facility that will be located at 11707 Culebra Road on the city’s far West Side.

According to the San Antonio Business Journal, the facility will total about 78,000 square feet and will include 524 storage units — a mix of climate- and non-climate-controlled units. The owner of the facility will be Taft Storage L.P.

Although this is the latest storage facility for SBS Construction, it is not the only project that the developer is currently working on in the city. Also in the works is the Stone Oak Storage facility in far North San Antonio. The Boerne-based developer has also worked in Baton Rouge, Houston and Kingwood.

The Taft Self Storage building is expected to be complete in the last quarter of this year.

In other news, the San Antonio Public Library has earned a LEED Gold certification. The San Antonio Business Journal reports that the Parman Branch Library is the first library and the first city-owned building in San Antonio to receive this designation.

Marmon Mok Architecture designed a 17,000-square-foot library that is both energy and water efficient. According to the business journal, construction workers used natural materials found in the region and steps were taken to preserve the ecosystem that surrounds the building. Swinerton Builders is the general contractor.

The library branch has been open less than a year.

Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council in 2000, LEED provides building owners and operators with a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.
