Hawthorne Retirement Group is planning to construct a 33,000-square-foot retirement home on 4.19 acres of land on the shore of Lake Cornelius in Davidson. If built, the senior-housing community would feature a public trail and boat launch. Davidson’s town board has conditionally approved the project’s master plan, reports the Huntersville Herald.

Among the board’s conditions is keeping the building as far away as possible from the shoreline, especially because Davidson’s building regulations require a 100-foot watershed buffer that cannot be met due to the shape of the peninsula. Furthermore, Hawthorne would be required to build some mixed-use development at the tip of the peninsula to ensure public access to the area.

Because the retirement home will be visible from I-77 into Davidson, city officials will be especially critical to the development’s general aspect and architecture.

Hawthorne Retirement Group offers management and consulting services for retirement, personal care, assisted living and memory care communities. The company operates similar developments across North America and the United Kingdom.

In further regional news, Carolina HealthCare System gained approval from North Carolina state regulators to build two free-standing emergency facilities in the Charlotte area, reports the Charlotte Business Journal.

The first facility will be added to Carolinas HealthCare’s CMC-Morrocroft medical office complex on Fairview Road at Cameron Valley Parkway. The 30,000-square-foot SouthPark area project will feature 14 emergency rooms, two observation rooms and imaging, pharmacy and lab services. Development costs are estimated at around $28 million.

The second free-standing emergency facility will be developed on a new site along Providence Road in South Charlotte and will feature 10 emergency rooms and lab, pharmacy and imaging services. The cost of the 26,500-square-foot facility is estimated at $27.7 million.

Both projects are expected to open in the first quarter of 2014.
