Newton, Mass.-based Hospitality Properties Trust recently announced it has entered a deal to purchase the entity that leases the Royal Sonesta Hotel in New Orleans. The transaction, bearing a price tag of approximately $150.5 million, also includes the acquisition of the company that owns the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Cambridge, Mass. (400 keys, two restaurants/bars and 22,000 square feet of meeting space), according to New Orleans City Business.

The Royal Sonesta Hotel is operated by Sonesta International Hotels Corp. and enjoys a prime location within the New Orleans hospitality market, at 300 Bourbon St., in the heart of the world-renowned French Quarter and approximately 16 miles away from the Louis Armstrong International Airport. The hotel features 483 guest rooms offering stunning views of the vibrant entertainment corridor, including 35 luxury suites and the R-Club on the seventh level, which has 30 rooms and two suites with private elevators, a concierge, a club lounge and special services. Other amenities include an outdoor swimming pool, cabana spa services, 20,000 square feet of meeting space, a 5,000-square-foot ballroom and five restaurants/bars.

The REIT owns 288 hotels and 185 travel centers located throughout the United States and in Ontario, Canada and Puerto Rico.

In other news, the Times-Picayune reports that the hospitality industry in New Orleans is getting a major makeover these days. Renovations are currently underway at several hotels around the city, including the Hilton New Orleans Riverside, the Windsor Court Hotel and the Sheraton New Orleans. Hilton is getting more than $20 million in upgrades, with work expected to be complete before the end of next summer. The high-class Windsor Court Hotel will get a $22 million facelift, to include replacement of 80 percent of the hotel’s furniture and a new spa on the fourth floor next to the pool. And Sheraton New Orleans is investing $45 million in the hotel’s refurbishment, scheduled for kickoff in December.
