After years of decline, a Greater Cincinnati mall is making a bid to bounce back. Middletown’s Towne Mall Galleria has signed Gabe’s as a major new tenant, taking another important step toward improving occupancy.

The Journal-News reports that the discount retailer plans to open a 60,000-square-foot store at the mall this October. It will be the 18th Gabe’s in the state and the first in the Middletown market.

A renovation of Gabe’s future space is already underway. Towne Mall Galleria L.L.C., the mall’s owner, plans to add a new façade, roof and ventilation system, as well as new walls and floors. The space was previously occupied by Dillard’s, but has been sitting empty since 2008, when the Little Rock, Ark.-based chain shuttered its Middletown store. Gabe’s lease, together with a Burlington Coat Factory store that opened in March, will bring the former Dillard’s space to full occupancy.

Gabe’s is a discount fashion, home décor and housewares retailer owned by Morgantown, West Va.-based Gabriel Brothers Inc. Founded in 1961, the company has now operates almost 50 stores in Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.
