A new development consisting of a grocery store and drive-thru pharmacy will anchor the site at the corner of 61st Street and Cottage Grove Avenue in Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood. On the site which used to be part of Grove Parc Plaza, once a federally subsidized residential community, Jewel-Osco announced it will open a full-service grocery store in late 2018. The 48,000-square-foot project belongs to a joint venture between Terraco and DL3 Realty.

The store will join other private and public developments along Cottage Grove Aveenue such as MetroSquash, a recreational and education center; Woodlawn Resource Center, a new residential hall for University of Chicago; five new apartment buildings and several new or rehabilitated dining options and coffee shops. Aldi is currently the only grocery store servicing the Woodlawn neighborhood.

The plan to build a new supermarket in the area is part of a larger redevelopment plan conducted by the Preservation of Affordable Housing nonprofit organization. Its purpose is to revitalize Woodlawn, one of South Side Chicago’s shrinking communities.
