Year-over-year, the only industry for which new orders decreased was transportation equipment, which fell by $2.8 billion, or 4.1 percent.

New orders for all manufacturing industries increased by 5.5 percent, or $22.7 billion, compared to January 2016, with the most significant changes coming from nondurable goods, up 9.5 percent, followed by fabricated metal products, with an increase of 7.8 percent. Year-over-year, the only industry for which new orders decreased was transportation equipment, which fell by $2.8 billion, or 4.1 percent. New orders in the furniture and related products industry rose 11.6 percent month-over-month in January, after a decrease of 8.1 percent in December. Two of the industries ranking among the bottom for month-over-month new orders were computers and electronic products (down 28 percent) and transportation equipment (down 24 percent).
