New orders for all manufacturing industries increased year-over-year by 5.8 percent or by approximately 27 billion in August 2017. The most significant increase came from Primary Metals, up by 14.6 percent compared to August 2016 and by 9.6 percent compared to July 2017.

New orders for all manufacturing industries increased year-over-year by 5.8 percent or by approximately 27 billion in August 2017. The most significant increase came from Primary Metals, up by 14.6 percent compared to August 2016 and by 9.6 percent compared to July 2017. New orders increased for the remaining industries and declined only for Furniture and Related Products (1.7 percent decrease) and for Electrical Products (0.4 percent decrease).

Compared to July 2017, new orders increased for most industries, the only exception coming from Furniture and Related Products (2.0 percent decrease). The biggest gains on a month-over-month basis were for Transportation Equipment (26.3 percent), followed by Electrical Products (17.7 percent).
