Alexandria, Va.—The Howard Hughes Corp. has acquired the 11.4-acre Macy’s store and parking field at Landmark Mall in Alexandria, Va. The company is planning to transform the mall into a mixed-use community with retail, residential and entertainment components to create an urban village on the west side. The new Landmark, originally built in 1965, will feature a line-up of retail, Class A residences, multiple plazas, outdoor seating, seasonal entertainment, full service and fast-casual dining options, green spaces, an updated transit center, public art and a luxury cinema.

The Howard Hughes Corp. is rebuilding the site, which is located 9 miles from Washington, D.C., on the initial rezoning approval by the Alexandria City Council passed in June 2013. Due to the redevelopment, the company is planning to close the interior portion of the mall at the end of January.

“Our vision is to revive the site and create a new urban hub on the west end of Alexandria,” said Mark Bulmash, senior vice president of Development for The Howard Hughes Corp., in prepared remarks. “This acquisition enables us to increase the scale of this catalytic redevelopment and transform Landmark into a vibrant destination attracting area residents and visitors.”
