Google’s existing data center in Lithia Springs

Following last month’s announcement of a $300 million expansion at the tech giant’s Lithia Springs data center facility, Google is shedding some more light on the project. The company has had a data center presence in the Atlanta region since 2003 and invested hundreds of millions of dollars to build and operate the site in Douglas County. Codenamed Woodside, the expansion project will add a new facility to the existing 500,000-square-foot data center on Riverside Parkway.

According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, a Development of Regional Impact filing submitted by the company to the state of Georgia on July 9 reveals plans for a four-story building totaling 808,355 square feet and auxiliary structures. An annex was added later, specifying that the project is not a Development of Regional Impact, the article reports. Under the Georgia Planning Act, DRIs are large-scale developments that are likely to have regional effects beyond the host local government’s jurisdiction. The Georgia Department of Community Affairs established thresholds by size and type for determining whether a development qualifies as a DRI.

Construction on the new data center is scheduled to begin later this summer and it should reach completion by the end of 2016. Once complete, the new data center is expected to create at least 25 new full-time positions. In addition to the expanding data center, Google also operates an office in Midtown Atlanta and plans to bring its gigabit Internet and TV service to nine cities in the metro.
