Benderson Development has paid $17.1 million to the Illinois Medical District for a 156,000-square-foot Costco store in Chicago’s South Loop. According to the City of Chicago Planning and Development, the retail center employs 125 people and has more than 3,600 products available.

Located at 1430 S. Ashland Ave., the building is among the largest Costco stores in the U.S., as it includes a gas station, tire center, optical center and a food court. Completed in 2012, the retail center was the second to serve Chicagoans within the city limits, while other stores had already been functioning in Schaumburg and Oak Brook since 1998.

The property spans 16 acres and is part of the Illinois Medical District Campus, the largest urban healthcare, educational, research and technology district in the nation. Costco, one of the large national retailers that have also tackled the online space, currently counts 20 stores in Illinois.
