Washington—Balfour Beatty’s relationship with Capitol Crossing in Washington, D.C., continues as the company lands yet another contract for the 2.2 million-square-foot mixed-use development. Property Group Partners, developer of Capitol Crossing, just awarded the general contracting firm a $196 million contract to build the North Block phase of the $1.3 billion project.
Designed to link the Capitol Hill and East End neighborhoods, Capitol Crossing will offer a work-play environment with office, retail and public open space spanning a three-block elevated deck hovering over I-395. The North Block segment of the 7-acre development comprises two 12-story trophy office towers encompassing an aggregate 960,000 square feet of Class A space, and premier ground-level retail totaling 70,000 square feet. The first building will be erected with the address of 200 Massachusetts Ave., NW., and will offer 410,000 square feet of office space and 25,000 square feet of retail.
The North Block buildings will be state-of-the-art—and they’ll be about as green as a building can be. With a powerhouse architectural trifecta at the helm—Skidmore Owings and Merrill, Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo and Associates and Kohn Pedersen Fox—the entire Capitol Crossing project has been designed to exceed the requirements for LEED Platinum certification, and if successful, the property will hold the title of the first Eco-District in Washington, D.C.
“Property Group Partners has a strong belief in reimagining cityscapes and revitalizing neighborhoods through sustainable building and innovative engineering,” Leon Blondin, president of Balfour Beatty’s Mid-Atlantic division, said in a prepared statement. Plans for EcoChimneys, green roofs, 440 bicycle spaces and designated parking for fuel-efficient cars should help do the trick. Balfour Beatty will do its part, relying on cutting-edge technologies and lean construction methods to keep it green.
Balfour Beatty already knows its way around Capitol Crossing. The company spearheaded the property’s preconstruction, utility relocation and platform construction on behalf of PGP.
