Aligned Energy has started work on a new master-planned data center campus, spanning 26 acres in Ashburn, Va. Upon full buildout, the facility will feature a total critical IT capacity of 180 megawatts. The project will be constructed in two phases, with completion estimated in 2019.

Aligned Energy’s Ashburn data center will be located at 22001 Loudoun County Parkway, an area with a very dense fiber network in place. The first phase of construction will occupy 370,000 square feet and deliver 80 megawatts. A second, 510,000-square-foot building will be added, with an additional 100 megawatts. The facility will provide tenants with cabinet power densities ranging from 1 to 50 kW, employing Aligned’s patented data center cooling technology. The facility will have a build-to-scale approach and, depending on clients’ needs, will be expandable up 240 megawatts.

Tenants at the carrier-neutral facility will be able to tap into a vast network of service providers. More than 50 carriers are present near the campus. The facility is expected to run at a PUE of 1.15 and use 100 percent renewable energy.

“Our new Ashburn data center campus addresses the needs of cloud providers and hyperscalers that demand a highly dynamic, scalable and future-proof data center solution. Data centers are the new engines of innovation for the 21st century and we are delighted to provide Northern Virginia with an incredibly efficient and highly reliable colocation data center platform,” said Andrew Schaap, CEO of Aligned Energy, in a prepared statement.

Schaap spoke to Commercial Property Executive in March about what drives the Phoenix data center market. Aligned Energy has a significant presence in Phoenix, Dallas and Salt Lake City.
