Houston—Construction has officially begun at the new Lyric Centre Parking Garage in downtown Houston. The groundbreaking ceremony already took place and was attended by representatives of the client, property developer, construction team and subcontractors. Gilbane Building Co. of Rhode Island is serving as the project’s general contractor.

“Gilbane is proud to be a part of this important project that will help transform the downtown Houston area”, Shawn Hooker, senior project executive for Gilbane Building Co., said in a prepared statement. “We are pleased to be working for Hines on this effort and strengthening our long-standing relationship with this important client.”

Lyric Centre Parking Garage is an eight-story, 327,315-square-foot facility that will feature eight levels above grade and two levels below grade, with a total capacity of approximately 810 automobiles. The ground level is designed for future restaurants and a foodservice marketplace. The public plaza and sidewalks adjoining the garage will be renovated to include pedestrian access and outdoor seating. Furthermore, a tunnel is planned under Prairie Street connecting the Lyric Centre to the Alley Theatre Center at the first basement level.
