80K SF FedEx Facility Breaks Ground; 451-Car Parking Opens in Overton Square
FedEx Corp. subsidiary FedEx Express has announced commencing construction on the newest facility at the FedEx Express WorldHub in Memphis: an 80,000-square-foot state-of-the-art temperature controlled facility and heavyweight pickup and delivery operation.

FedEx Corp. subsidiary FedEx Express has announced construction of the newest facility at the FedEx Express WorldHub in Memphis: an 80,000-square-foot state-of-the-art temperature controlled pickup and delivery facility.
The new cold chain facility, located at 2617 Democrat Road, will directly interface with existing operations at the WorldHub, resulting in higher transit efficiency.
The high-tech facility will be European Union Transported Asset Protection Association standard compliant and feature temperature-controlled rooms in three different product climate ranges: -25°C to -10°C (frozen), 2°C to 8°C (cold) and 15°C to 25°C (controlled room temperature), as well as flexible walls that permit precise temperature control and stock separation, real time CO2, humidity and thermal monitoring, on-site International Dock Agent (IDA) station and Thermal Blanket staging area.
The facility is set to complete and be operational by fall 2014. Indiana-based engineering and architectural firm MSKTD and Associates Inc. is handling design and construction.
In other news, the much-anticipated Overton Square parking garage has officially opened. The 451-space carpark is owned by the City of Memphis and managed by Loeb Properties Inc. Designed by Looney Ricks Kiss Architects, the facility was constructed by Montgomery Martin Contractors. Republic Parking handles everyday operations, while Mid-South Security and Security One handle security infrastructure and staffing.
The parking garage sits atop a recently built storm water retention facility, which handles Lick Creek flooding issues. The site was in Loeb Properties’ ownership until 2012, when the City purchased it.
“It made sense to build a parking garage on top of the detention facility for the greater community to use, including all of the theatres and nearby businesses located outside of the Overton Square development. The marrying of the two projects was in the best interest of the citizens of Memphis,” declared Loeb, senior vice president of Asset Management Carey D. White.
