A partnership between Woolpert, Mecklenburg County and the town of Matthews will result in a $32 million sports complex. With a first phase of the project completed in 2013, the team enters the second and final construction phase.

The Mecklenburg County Sportsplex located at 1505 Tank Town Road in Matthews is a sports-focused facility with the purpose of hosting a wide variety of weekend tournaments for soccer, rugby, lacrosse, football, as well as weekday practices and league play for local teams and organizations.

“With the championship field, we’re trying to create something unique that can be a really grand, regionally strong destination facility,” said Andrew Pack, practice leader for higher education and athletics at Woolpert. “When it’s complete, the site can host U.S. Youth Championship Soccer tournaments and other high-profile sporting events.”

The Sportsplex is expected to be complete in fall 2016. Amenities such as restroom buildings, shelters, walking trails, playgrounds, 1,200 parking spaces, and a two-story field house will be offered. Locker rooms, catering space, a meeting area, and covered balconies overseeing the championship field are planned for the field house.

The general contractor for the Mecklenburg County Sportsplex is J.D. Goodrum Co.

For this project, Woolpert provided planning, landscape architecture, architecture, civil engineering, surveying, geotechnical subsurface exploration, natural resource investigation and wetland delineation, permitting, and administration.
