Vegas Airport Awards $1.2B Construction Contract

Las Vegas’s McCarran International Airport has awarded a $1.2 billion construction contract to Perini Building Co. Under terms of the deal, locally-based Perini will build a new terminal building, underground automated transit system and an aircraft ramp. Construction is slated to begin in August on Terminal 3 (pictured), which includes an elevated roadway structure fronting the facility, over roadway pedestrian bridges, among other features. The construction timeline to complete the entire project is estimated at three and a half years. Merrill Lynch Backs Out of Plans to Move HQ to WTC

AIA Forecast: Lackluster 2008, Worse 2009, But No Major Recession

The latest semiannual construction forecast from the American Institute of Architects, released today, foresees “a mild decline” of 1.9 percent in nonresidential construction activity in 2008, followed by a more severe decline of 6.7 percent in 2009. This latest forecast is in contrast to the AIA’s previous semiannual forecast, in December, in which the AIA Consensus Construction Panel predicted modest growth in inflation-adjusted nonresidential construction spending this year, with a modest decline next year. Chattanooga to Become Home of $1B VW Plant

After considering locales in Alabama and Michigan, Volkswagen Group of America Inc. has just decided to develop its new U.S. manufacturing facility in Chattanooga, Tenn. As the likes of Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Corp. continue to struggle, Volkswagen will shell out $1 billion to complete its new production plant. The 1,350-acre Enterprise South Industrial Park, owned by the City of Chattanooga and Hamilton County, will be the site of the new facility. Greenberg Traurig to Anchor Miami’s Met 2 Office Tower

International law firm Greenberg Traurig has inked a 15-year, 150,000-square-foot lease at the upcoming Met 2 office tower in Downtown Miami, taking its place as the building’s anchor tenant. The new lease averages in the mid-to-high $40s per square foot over its 15-year-term. The firm, which will use the space as its Miami headquarters, is expected to move in Fall 2010. Centro Sells Off U.S. Assets for $714M

Centro Properties, in an effort to deal with the heavy burden of debt that tanked the company’s stock price last year and put the company under new management, is selling 29 of the 31 retail properties held by its Centro America Fund (CAF) in the United States for about $714 million. All together, the properties total about 5.1 million square feet in 15 states. Centro has not identified the buyer, which is reported to be a U.S.-based pension fund. The deal excludes CAF’s partial share of Independence Mall in Wilmington, N.C., and Elk Park Center in Elk River, Minn., which…

W. P. Carey Closes $58M in German Acquisitions

W. P. Carey & Co. has acquired a pair of German properties in Soest and Bad Wünnenberg from Arques Industries for approximately $58 million. Two of Carey’s publicly held non-traded REIT affiliates,CPA:16 – Global and CPA:17 – Global, purchased the properties, which have been leased back to portfolio company Actebis under a triple net long-term lease. The Soest facility serves as Actebis’ global headquarters and the Bad Wünnenberg property serves as a logistics facility for the company. “We’ve done about a half-billion Euros in Germany in the last few years.
