Third Trader Joe’s Store in Pittsburgh to Open at McCandless Crossing in 2014

The third Trader Joe’s store in the Pittsburgh area will be located at the McCandless Crossing mixed-use development in the North Hills, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

The specialty grocer’s new 11,500-square-foot location will open at the intersection of McKnight Road and Duncan Avenue in 2014. Other Trader Joe’s stores in the Pittsburgh area opened in East Liberty in 2006 and in Upper St. Clair in 2011.

The new establishment will be part of McCandless Crossing’s 250,000-square-foot Town Center, the fourth phase of the 1.2 million-square-foot complex developed by AdVenture Development LLC.

“Creating an environmentally green project with places for people to live, work and play is one of our main goals,” developer Kevin Dougherty, president of AdVenture Development, said in prepared remarks.

The latest additions to the project include what would become the region’s first Carrabba’s Italian Grill, as well as a Bonefish Grill location, a Longhorn Steakhouse and home furnishings retailer Home Goods. Dick’s Sporting Goods will be taking up 50,000 square feet of retail space within the new development, while a 12-screen, 45,000 square foot Cinemark theater is currently under construction. In order to meet demand for more housing in the region, plans also call for 53 townhomes along Cumberland Road.

McCandless Crossing’s completed phases include a Lowes Home Improvement store, an LA Fitness, Fidelity Bank, a CVS pharmacy, an IHOP restaurant and others. The region’s first Hilton Home2 Suites, currently under construction, is also part of the new development. Upon completion, the hotel will be the first extended stay property in the North Hills. AdVenture Development is also planning to build office space and a second hotel on the rest of the 130-acre property at Duncan Avenue in McCandless Township.
