Sofran Partners and R.W. Smith Co. broke ground on the expansion of a retail development in Shelbyville, Tenn. The new 18,900-square-foot building will sit at the northeast corner of the existing Shelbyville Square shopping center and is expected to be completed during the first quarter of 2018.

Located at 1020 N. Main St., the development will provide easy access to US Highway 231 and is half a mile north of the town center. The new retail building has a number of tenants already lined up, including Pizza Hut, Lee Spa Nails, Petsense and Highway 55 Burgers, Shakes and Fries. The remaining 8,000 square feet of available space is being marketed by Roy Martin, vice president of leasing and management with Sofran Partners. Five suites are available, ranging in size from 1,400 to 2,100 square feet.

The existing part of the shopping center, which includes a 48,000-square-foot Kroger grocery store, a Burger King and carwash, was initially developed in 2003 by Sofran. Kroger also operates a gas station on the site. There are plans to renovate the grocery store in the future.
