RKI Instruments, a gas detection equipment manufacturer, has introduced the GX-3R and the GX-3R Pro personal gas monitors suitable for confined spaces. The products are approximately half the weight and size of the average 4 or 5 gas detectors and can fit in the palm of one’s hand. Both gas monitors can be clipped comfortably in the OSHA recommended ‘breathing zone’, which is a 10-inch radius of the worker’s nose and mouth and requires that worker exposure monitoring air samples be collected there.

The GX-3R is a 4 gas monitor, while the GX-3R Pro is capable of detecting five gas types separately. Using an RK Link app, the GX-3R Pro can be paired with a smartphone via Bluetooth and can be configured to automatically send notifications containing alarm status and GPS location whenever a worker goes into alarm. The app can also be used to show device readings, configure alarms and set bump test intervals.

Both monitors utilize microsensors that have two active filaments to increase resistance to silicone poisoning—if one of the filaments is damaged, the other takes over. The O2 sensor has a 3- to 5-year life span and the extended battery mode allows the monitors to be used continuously for up to 40 hours before recharging.
