Rick Fedrizzi Named CEO of the International WELL Building Institute
The co-founder of the U.S. Green Building Council will also assume the role of Chairman of International WELL Building Institute’s Board of Directors.

Washington—The International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) appointed Rick Fedrizzi as CEO and chairman of its board of directors. Fedrizzi, currently the CEO and founding chairman of the U. S. Green Building Council (USGBC), will assume its new executive role starting November 4th.
“As we continue to grow and expand the adoption of both the WELL Building Standard and the WELL Accredited Professional program globally, we enthusiastically welcome Rick Fedrizzi into this leadership role to help lead IWBI to new heights,” Paul Scialla, IWBI founder, said in a prepared statement.
Rick Fedrizzi co-founded USGBC in 1993, while he was working as environmental marketing director at United Technologies Corporation, and has been leading the organization for the last 12 years as CEO. He is credited with the success of establishing the green building certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design—LEED) as a global mainstream practice. Mahesh Ramanujam, USGBC’s COO, will take over responsibilities from Fedrizzi.
In his new role, Fedrizzi will strengthen the partnership between LEED and WELL for environmental sustainability and human health in relation to the built environment.
“Our buildings and communities should help humans thrive. Sustainability plus health is a powerful lens through which to view the world, and WELL has approached this goal in a similar way to how we developed the LEED green building program,” Rick Fedrizzi said.
Fedrizzi spent more than 25 years at United Technologies Corporation and in 2001 he founded Green-Think, an environmentally focused marketing and communications consulting firm. Three years later, he left the role of volunteer founding chair of USGBC to become its full-time CEO.
He is a member on numerous boards and advisory committees including the Center for Health and the Global Environment at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Bank of America’s National Community Advisory Council.
IWBI is a public benefit corporation whose mission is to improve human health and well-being through the built environment through its WELL Building Standard and WELL Accredited Professional program.
