Northwood Academy is ready for a brand new athletic and academic campus. The project is set to rise within a 2,300-acre master planned community nestled in the heart of Charleston.

Developed by Daniel Island Co., the emerging Carnes Crossroads community will become a destination for no less than 750 students who attend the highly-ranked private school from pre-school through 12th grade. By the time it opens, the upcoming campus will have the capacity to expand Northwood Academy’s enrollment by an additional 25 percent.

“Schools are a vital component of any community, and to have the North area’s finest private school here at Carnes Crossroads is a real honor,” Matt Sloan, president of the Daniel Island Co., commented in prepared remarks. “Eighteen years ago Bishop England High School made a similar move to Daniel Island, and I believe both the school and the community became stronger as they grew. We’re looking forward to seeing a similar synergistic relationship evolve with Northwood at Carnes Crossroads.”

Carnes Crossroads aims to become a central gathering place and a preferred residential address for this growing area of the city. The development will include traditional neighborhoods and parks, a school and church, office space, medical facilities, shops and restaurants to make living as enjoyable and as convenient as possible.

The first phase for the new Northwood Academy at Carnes Crossroads will encompass space for the Upper School, which is expected to open in August 2016. Meanwhile, the Lower School and a Preschool are scheduled to open in August 2017. The school’s Carnes Crossroads campus is already home to Northwood Church and the Academy’s home athletic field, along with administrative offices and move-in ready space for the Preschool.

The recent sale of the private school’s North Charleston property set the wheels in motion for the upcoming development. Northwood Academy had been awaiting the sale of its current campus before beginning construction on the project. The new 100,000-square-foot facility was designed by Red Iron Architects and is being constructed by Trident Construction.
