In the latest big move at Marcus & Millichap Real Estate Investment Services Inc., 25-year company veteran Alan Pontius is adding retail to his responsibilities, the firm revealed on Friday. The San Francisco-based Pontius continues to lead the company’s national office and industrial properties group, as he has for the past nine years, as well as its healthcare and net-lease business teams.

In his expanded role, the San Francisco-based Pontius succeeds Bernard Haddigan, the head of Marcus & Millichap’s national retail group. During a fourteen-year stint running the retail group, Haddigan had become one of the industry’s most visible retail real estate executives and was a frequent media presence. A statement from Marcus & Millichap said that Haddigan had retired from the firm.

Pontius’ promotion and Haddigan’s departure are the latest in a series of major changes at Marcus & Millichap.  On July 1, 29-year company veteran John Kerin took over as president & CEO, succeeding long-time company leader Harvey Green, who retired.

In a statement Friday, Kerin cited Pontius’ extensive experience as an agent, manager and senior executive. A graduate of San Francisco State University, Pontius started his career at Marcus & Millichap in 1985 as a sales associate. Eight years later, he took his first managerial position at the company when he was named regional manager of the Palo Alto office.  In 2002, Pontius became national director of the company’s office and industrial group, and attained the title of managing director three years ago.
