Rising to meet the high demand for storage space in Chicago, Metro Storage, LLC is developing an 884-unit, state-of-the-art facility in Skokie, Ill.

According to a news release, the company has recently purchased a former retail building at 3240 W. Touhy Ave., with plans to repurpose it into 86,000 square feet of climate-controlled storage space. The new Metro Self Storage facility will feature multiple loading and unloading access points, a high-tech security system, as well as a modern business office. The two-story building will ultimately incorporate 884 controlled-climate units ranging from 25 to 300 square feet.

“We knew this property was a good selection for conversion due to its excellent location on an extremely busy east/west arterial street with a dense three mile population, strong market demographics and a great retail building,” Blair Nigel, CEO of Metro Storage, said in a statement.

The now-vacant building is part of the Town Center Plaza shopping center at 3220-3240 W. Touhy Ave., on the border between Chicago and the suburbs of Skokie and Evanston. Construction work on the new facility will begin later this summer, with completion scheduled for early 2016.

Once finalized, the building will be the 19th Metro Self Storage facility in the Chicago area. The company has recently announced plans to convert a former warehouse in Northbrook, Ill. into a storage facility with 660 climate-controlled units.
