Marriott Hotels reached an important milestone with the opening of its 4,000th hotel, the Marriott Marquis Washington, D.C. The hotel’s inaugural catered event will be held on May 10, while its formal dedication and grand opening will be held a month later, on June 10.
At a cost of $520 million, the Marriott Marquis Washington, D.C., is the largest hotel in the city and one of only five Marriott Marquis properties in the country. It features 1,175 rooms, 49 of which are suites, along with five dining outlets, as well as more than 105,000 square feet of above- and below-grade meeting space, including a 30,600-square-foot Marquis Ballroom and two 10,800-square-foot ballrooms. Amenities include LCD televisions in every room, free WiFi, a bi-level fitness center, a lounge, an all-glass rooftop and more.
The 15-story hotel spans almost an entire city block. It is located at 901 Massachusetts Ave., N.W., right next door to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. The Marriott Marquis is connected to the convention center via an underground concourse and is expected to become its anchor hotel. Events DC, the District’s official convention and sports authority and the owner-operator of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, contributed $206 million to the construction of the hotel. Together, the two properties are expected to help improve the city’s economy.
“From the nine-seat root beer stand that my parents started 87 years ago here in Washington to the milestone opening of our 4,000th hotel, we have been fortunate to call this town our home,” said J.W. Marriott Jr., executive chairman. “Washington is one of the world’s greatest cities and we are excited to host visitors and groups from across the globe at our newest hotel to fly the Marriott Hotels flag. The Marriott Marquis Washington, D.C., also has created more than 500 new jobs, with 63 percent coming from the District.”
Cooper Carry Architects and TVS Architects, both of Atlanta, designed the hotel to incorporate the site’s original historic Samuel Gompers AFL-CIO headquarters and also to earn LEED Silver certification. It is operated by Marriott International Inc. Quadrangle Development and its partner, Capstone, are the property’s owners.
