Havana—Kempinski has announced it will open a 246-key hotel in the historic Manzana de Gómez building in the heart of Old Havana—a UNESCO World Heritage site—in the second quarter.

According to Carlos Latuff, executive president of Grupo de Turismo Gaviota SA, the building was Cuba’s first European-style shopping arcade and was constructed at the beginning of the 20th century. “Europe’s oldest luxury hotel group Kempinski is a perfect fit with the Manzana de Gómez” thanks to its 120-year history, Latuff said in prepared remarks.

Markus Semer, chairman & CEO of Kempinski, added that the property “will be Cuba’s first modern luxury five-star hotel.” The luxury rooms and suites will range from 40 to 150 square meters in size (roughly 1,410 to almost 1,620 square feet) and will have above-average ceiling heights. Amenities will include a rooftop terrace and swimming pool, a more than 1,000-square-meter spa (about 10,700 square feet), three restaurants, a lobby bar, cigar lounge, and a business center.
