Helsinki—Skanska has recently signed a contract in the amount of $165 million with the City of Helsinki for the renovation of the Olympic Stadium in Finland’s capital. The renovation is expected to commence in the first quarter of 2017 and to be completed in 2019.

The project includes new underground sport, gym and maintenance facilities as well as complete renovations of the running tracks, seating arrangements and building roofs to cover all the stands and terraces. The building, situated on 12 acres, is 797 feet long and up to 522 feet wide.

In total, approximately 207,750 square feet of new development will be added to the project, including new restaurants and restrooms, expanding the stadium to roughly 969,000 square feet. The Olympic Stadium will serve as a multifunctional arena that will host both sports and international cultural events.

The Olympic Stadium’s construction began in 1934 and was completed in 1938, the same year when the Stadium was inaugurated. The Olympic Games were supposed to take place in Helsinki, but due to the World War II, the 15th edition of the Games was arranged only in 1952.
