Freddie Mac Hires New VP, Chief Economist

Sam Khater brings more than 20 years of finance experience to Freddie Mac. He previously worked for CoreLogic and Fannie Mae.

Freddie Mac has hired housing and economics expert Sam Khater as vice president & chief economist. Khater will lead a team of researchers responsible for market analysis and interpretation of economic trends within the housing market.

Khater’s team will focus on policy issues potentially affecting Freddie Mac, in addition to analyzing the overall housing market. He specializes in producing original research, economic overviews and identifying trends in the real estate business. Together with his team, he will look for new ways to improve the housing finance system.

I look forward to keeping our customers and stakeholders apprised of developments in the market,” Khater said in a prepared statement.

Prior to joining Freddie Mac, Khater worked for 11 years at CoreLogic, where he served as deputy chief economist & vice president of research. He was responsible for producing research materials, internal consulting for product development, and served as the corporate spokesperson for print, radio and television media and industry publications. Before his tenure at CoreLogic, he worked for Fannie Mae as a senior economist, constructing long-term housing and mortgage market models. He also developed economic models which assessed progress towards regulatory and statutory goals. Khater worked at Fannie Mae for 10 years. He holds a master’s degree in network economics from Georgetown University and a bachelor’s degree in economics and finance from George Mason University.
