First Finish DC Project Receives LEED Silver Certification

Washington, D.C.—First Finish, a Columbia, Md.-based full-service general contractor specializing in the delivery of fast-track hospitality renovations, announced the Mason & Rook Hotel in Washington, D.C., was awarded LEED Silver certification. The Mason & Rook project was a complete rebranding of the original property.

The renovation consisted of constructing a new, one-story addition adjacent to the ground floor and over the existing basement-level parking garage to create a ballroom. All nine stories of guestrooms were demolished, keeping only the perimeter walls and floor/ceiling decks. Guestroom renovations included MEP riser relocations and footprint modifications. Renovations on the previously abandoned rooftop include the addition of a new pool with a bar enclosure, the installation of a full-glass railing system to meet DCRA zoning requirements and cladding the existing industrial finishes on the penthouse and roof with IPE. The former drive lane was removed and the first floor was extended to expand the lobby to allow for a better guest experience upon arrival.

The expansion of this space required adding a new steel canopy as well as a re-grading of the existing point of arrival for guest vehicles and pedestrian foot traffic. The main level was finished out with a new restaurant and bar area and a steel trellis for the new restaurant patio that was installed.

“The renovation of the Mason & Rook Hotel completes an extensive and dramatic reposition of the Helix Hotel,” said David Burman, president of First Finish, in prepared remarks. “Being one of our most complex renovations to date coupled with being our first LEED Silver projects makes me extremely proud of all team members involved.”
