Economy Watch Weekly: Employment, Construction Spending Still Strong

Total payroll employment increased by 223,000 jobs in May, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This amount beat the average of the previous 12 months, which was an increase of 191,000 and up from 164,000 in April.
U.S. construction spending during April came in at an annualized rate of $1.3 trillion, or 1.8 percent above the revised March total, according to the Census Bureau. For the year, the rise in private spending was 7.6 percent, the same as the overall rate. Economy Editor Dees Stribling gives a breakdown of these two topics, for the week ending June 1, 2018.
