Developers Break Ground on Trophy Office Building in Downtown D.C.

The JBG Companies has partnered with ICG Properties and Rittenhouse Partners to develop a new trophy property, meant to enhance Washington’s lower 16th street corridor. On April 22, representatives from the three companies were joined by city officials for the groundbreaking of 900 Sixteenth Street, a new Class A building located just two blocks from the White House.

The JBG Cos. has partnered with ICG Properties and Rittenhouse Partners to develop a new trophy property, meant to enhance Washington’s lower 16th street corridor. On April 22, representatives from the three companies were joined by city officials for the groundbreaking of 900 16th St., a new Class A building located just two blocks from the White House.

The new structure will stand nine stories tall, at the corner of 16th and I streets, N.W. It will offer 125,000 square feet of office space, 4,000 square feet of ground-floor retail, a fitness center and three levels of below-grade parking. Miller & Chevalier, one of the nation’s premier law firms, will occupy about 70 percent of the office space. Third Church of Christ, Scientist will also occupy 12,000 square feet of space, including a new church, reading room, auditorium and administrative offices.

900 16th St. is designed by the world-renowned Robert A.M. Stern Architects of New York, in association with Cooper Carry Inc., the architect of record. The skin of the new building will be constructed with high-quality materials such as white Cherokee marble, Indiana limestone and bronze trim, the same materials used in many monuments and government buildings along the National Mall. 900 16th St. will also feature two entrances, one for the commercial space and one for the new Third Church of Christ, Scientist church.

“We are thrilled to break ground on this exciting project at the heart of our nation’s capital,” JBG principal Britt Snider said in a statement for the press. “Located just blocks from the White House, this landmark Washington property will offer tenants an exceptional space and convenient access to our nation’s power corridors.”

The developers did not disclose the cost of the project. It is expected to be completed in December 2015.
