Fort Lauderdale, Fla.Tutor Perini Corp. subsidiary Tutor Perini Building Corp. has received an extension to its contract to build Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport’s Terminal 4 Federal Inspection Services Expansion.

“The Broward County Aviation Department’s (BCAD) award of this critical work to Tutor Perini demonstrates the confidence that BCAD has in our ability to successfully complete the work,” Danny Hoisman, Tutor Perini Building Corp. executive vice president, told Commercial Property Executive. “The work at BCAD is critical work in Broward County, Florida and, while Tutor Perini is a large national general contractor, we have a strong local presence in Broward County and a commitment to pursuing the important work in the County.”

The project consists of a phased expansion and renovation which will offer a new international passenger arrival facility upon completion.

“This project is one of the first in the nation to institute U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s new ‘One Stop’ protocol, which will significantly improve passenger flow and reduce wait times,” Hoisman said.

In Task 1, which is already underway, there will be a new baggage recheck facility for arriving international passengers, new public restrooms and a variety of interior renovations to optimize the current operation.

Task 2, set to begin in the second quarter of 2016, will consist of a new 55,000-square-foot baggage hall with four baggage claim carousels and an inbound bag room with six inbound baggage conveyors. During this phase, a temporary secondary processing facility will also be housed in the area.

Task 3 will consist of a complete reconfiguration of the existing facility and build-out of new shell space constructed in the Eastern Gate Expansion.

Once fully completed, the majority of passenger services and baggage screening will be contained on the arrivals level.

The new facility will be capable of processing 1,800 arriving passengers per hour. Substantial completion is anticipated in May 2017.

Earlier this year, Perini Building Corp. was selected to construct the Tribute Portfolio and Element by Westin Hotel, a dual-branded hotel in Fort Lauderdale that will add 323 guestrooms to the city’s hospitality market.
