Global contractor Brookfield Multiplex has received the building contract for the new South East Regional Hospital in Bega, New South Wales. The $154 million (AUD 171.6 million) project will rise on a 43 acre greenfield site on Tathra Road, less than a mile from the Bega CBD. Scheduled for a 2016 completion, the development is the biggest infrastructure project ever to be undertaken in the Bega Valley Shire. The project will eventually create 1,500 new jobs.

Funding for the South East Regional Hospital is provided from several government sources, with the bulk of the money, $143.7 million (AUD 160.1 million) provided through the Australian Government’s Health and Hospitals Fund.  $8.9 million (AUD 10 million) will be made available by the New South Wales (NSW) Government, that also arranged an extra $1.32 million (AUD 1.474 million) in funds for additional oral care services at the location.

The new hospital is designed to cover the health care needs of the greater Bega Valley through 2021 and beyond, offering community, ambulatory and inpatient services, as well as community mental health and drug and alcohol services. The South East Regional Hospital will include maternity and pediatrics services, featuring four single maternity suites, two birthing suites, fetal and maternity monitoring room, two neo-natal beds and emergency pediatric services including four acute, four ambulatory and two emergency bays.  Three new operating theatres and a procedure room will significantly increase orthopedic services in the region, as will several new facilities for orthopedic rehabilitation and palliative care. Bega Valley emergency services will also be expanded with a 15-bay ER department, complete with an emergency cardiac and intensive care unit. Further services to be available at the new medical facility include medical imagining, pathology, pharmacy, management and support services, as well as teaching and training areas. A 500-car parking garage and a helipad will provide swift and easy access to the South East Regional Hospital.

“Our aim is to deliver a health care facility that has a positive impact on not just patients but the entire community,” said David Ghannoum, regional managing director, Brookfield Multiplex New South Wales. “We are excited to be bringing a modern health care facility to the people of the far South Coast and adding to the string of health care projects we have delivered around Australia.” Brookfield Multiplex has previous experience with successfully delivering New South Wales health care projects such as the recently completed Chris O’Brien Lifehouse and the Clinical Services Building at the Royal North Shore Hospital, both in Sydney.
