Bowie State Breaks Ground on State-of-the-Art Center

Bowie State University has finally broken ground on the Center for Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Nursing (CNSMN). Currently under construction on the site of the former J. Alexander Wiseman Centre, this state-of-the-art facility will replace the Crawford Science Building and will provide a new home to the university’s natural sciences, mathematics and nursing departments.

Clark Construction is building the 148,995-square-foot center at a cost of $70 million and after designs by the Washington, D.C. and Atlanta offices of Perkins+Will, which have been hired to provide design services that include architecture, branded environments, interiors, and landscaping.

The project is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2017. It will deliver a LEED Gold certified building, with state-of-the-art classrooms, teaching and research laboratories, computer labs, a three-story multipurpose room, a green house and a three-story atrium with skylights.

The new CNSMN is designed to support and catalyze the increasing research and innovation merging mathematics and the natural sciences, and to help the university’s bioinformatics program grow. Additionally, the center will improve Bowie State’s efforts to attract and retain highly qualified researchers in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields, as well as to recruit more students interested in STEM.
