The chairman of the Federal Reserve was on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, testifying as part of his “Semiannual Monetary Policy Report to the Congress,” and his assessment of the economy, at least for the short term, wasn’t particularly cheerful. Likewise, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the Consumer Price Index was unchanged in June. But the National Association of Homebuilders’ Housing Market Index for July was up six points to 35.

U.S. retail sales dropped 0.5 percent in June compared with May, but were up by 3.8 percent year-over-year, according to the Census Bureau on Monday.

Word from the negotiating nabobs in Europe on Friday seemed to be positive, though as usual the details of the agreement remained a little elusive. CoreLogic reported a slight uptick in foreclosures at the federal level, but more significant changes–both positive and negative–among a number of states.
